Thoughts: This week I begin reading this book titled Dilla Time written by Dan Charnas. Charnas not only chronicles the life of the iconic music producer J Dilla but with a clarity he details and annunciates the Genius of Dilla. Now I was only 9 years old when Dilla passed away, so I really did not recognize his brilliance as a kid. But as I listen to his work today and read this book I am just amazed, this brotha was truly one of one. Recognizing his gifts, I can only think about his legacy and his work and influence. Dilla’s style was special because his timing couldn’t be copied so it seemed offbeat and not natural. His influence of time is hard not to hear in the work of the Detriot rappers of today like Tee Grizzly or Sada Baby. As I reflect on J Dilla today, I think about how important it is to walk to the beat of your own drum because when you do you not only find out something about yourself but you discover something about the world. And when you discover that something about the world you discover your purpose and leave a legacy. Therefore, be offbeat and walk to your own cadence. Your rhythm can’t be matched. P.E.A.C.E.
